Favorite (Pregnancy) Things

I have tried to not write too much about the fact that I’m pregnant because, well Modern Reject is not a baby blog. It’s not even a mom blog. But, I  happen to be a mom who is having a third kiddo.

As much as I’ve tried to avoid the “pregnancy posts” this one was inevitable. This post is actually not just Favorite Things, but also least favorite things–of which there are many during these torturous nine months.

I’ll start with the things I love, like shopping for baby clothes. Then I’ll share the things I don’t love, like creepy older women touching my belly without permission. My Favorite (Pregnancy) Things for Friday…. Continue reading Favorite (Pregnancy) Things

Happy 4th of July

I love the 4th of July. Fireworks, BBQs, fruit-flavored cocktails (oh wait, is that just me?), and, of course, time with family and friends.

Since becoming a believer, though, the 4th of July has taken on new meaning for me. Freedom is now something within my grasp. Freedom is no longer an abstract concept, but rather a reality.

He promises us no less:

John 8:36
So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. (NIV)

2 Corinthians 3:17
Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. (NIV)

Galatians 5:1
It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. (NIV) This is the verse my one and only tattoo is based upon, in fact.

Ephesians 3:12
In Him [Christ] and through faith in Him we may approach God with freedom and confidence. (NIV)

I hope and pray that this July 4th represents freedom in Christ for you, as well as the blessed independence we celebrate as Americans. How do you celebrate the 4th of July? Where have you gained freedom in Christ where there was little or none previously?

Favorite (Summer) Things

Well, it is officially summer, which, in most parts of the United States, brings about elation and joy. I, however, reside in a city that happens to be about 20 feet away from the sun–Scottsdale, Arizona.

Yesterday, the city issued a heat advisory warning as we all watched the temperature climb to a scorching 110 degrees. And that ain’t nothin’. We will reach the 120s by July. Reminder: I am pregnant. Actually, I am really pregnant. I’m due at the end of summer. Oh, lucky me.

But, for all of my complaining about the heat, I really do love summer. I have such great memories of my childhood summers in particular. Now, as my kids grow older, I get to watch them experience some of the same adventures.

Here are my Favorite (Summer) Things for Friday, including some good grub, sweat, bodies of water, and tropical cocktails… Continue reading Favorite (Summer) Things

Favorite (Road Trip) Things

I have been in San Diego this week, a mere 6 hour drive from my hometown of Scottsdale. As you are reading this, I will most likely be on the road, headed back home tan and refreshed.

It should therefore go without saying that this Friday’s Favorite Thing is about all about road trips. Oh yes.

I have taken many a road trips in my life, some lasting hours, some lasting weeks and even a month. I’ve learned a lot along the (high)way. Here are my Favorite (Road Trip) Things for Friday… Continue reading Favorite (Road Trip) Things

Favorite (New) Things

Newness is all around me. My husband and I are in the midst of house church planting…something neither of us has done before. My husband has also been a full-time entrepreneur for the first time in our marriage this last year.

Oh, and we’re having a baby in 3 months. Babies are pretty new.

I have to say though, I like the newness. I love discovering new things and experiencing new things. I’m not just a creature of habit. So, with all things shiny and new in mind, here are 3 new things I have been loving…my Favorite (New) Things… Continue reading Favorite (New) Things

Favorite (Retro) Things

I have a bit of a soft spot for anything retro, especially items from the 1950s and 60s. My husband calls me a traditionalist.

Sure, I have a computer, a cell phone, and a Wii, but I would much prefer to travel back to the days when things were simpler. Days when design and form were as important as function and utility. When writing meant clanking a typewriter and people still read newspapers.

So, this Friday, I am sharing some of my Favorite (Retro) Things, nostalgic for the past and the ways things used to be… Continue reading Favorite (Retro) Things

Favorite (Tolan) Things

My son, Tolan, is fast approaching his third birthday. In the last few months, it seems that he has had a huge growth spurt, complete with added inches to his height and words to his vocabulary.

Every other day he is doing or saying something brand new. Yet, as the birth of this next baby grows closer (and I grow larger), the reality that Tolan will no longer be “the baby” sets in.

My son is a boy. All boy. He is the opposite of his sister. He is a little man who does little man things in a little man body. He is entertaining, to say the least. Here are some of the funny things he says and awesomely boy things he does… Continue reading Favorite (Tolan) Things

Favorite (Nerd) Things Friday

Have you ever been called a nerd? I have…and I like it. I think we all have a little bit of nerd in us…the part of us that is still childlike and excitable. Our inner nerd is the reason we secretly get stoked over the things we love, like a book, or a movie, or the newest shiniest piece of electronic equipment.

Nerds are everywhere, even though people don’t like to admit that they are one. I have certainly felt like the loner-nerd, alone in the things I love. And as proof that you are not alone in your nerd-dom, I thought I’d share with you this Friday some of my own inner nerd-isms. Continue reading Favorite (Nerd) Things Friday

Favorite (Riley Saying) Things

I think my kids are two of the funniest people I know. I am constantly surprised by and snorting from their humor.

My daughter, the 4 year-old, has been amazingly funny lately. As this this third baby’s arrival gets closer and closer, I am beginning to appreciate my first two kids even more.

Every day on Twitter, I tweet a “Riley Quote of the Day.” I thought I’d share a list of some of her funniest moments with you. If you haven’t already, you can follow me on Twitter, too, and make sure you can read her hilarity each day. Let the smiling begin… Continue reading Favorite (Riley Saying) Things

Favorite (Blog) Things

This was a record awesome week, (heck, so was the whole month of March) on Modern Reject, so thank you. I found myself extra busy this week, too, but I’ve decided to retire from blogging.
