In Defense of Housewives

I have always disliked the term “housewife.” Blame it on my background, but it has always sounded a bit like a plantation term. Or it sounds like a woman who is “kept,” bought and paid for, with nothing to do but stay home and stuff her face full of delicacies.

I prefer “homemaker.” I do, in many ways, make my home. However, I’m not solely responsible for my house being a home, either.

I still have not gotten used to telling strangers and people I am meeting for the first time what it is I do when they ask. Sure, if I’m meeting another Christian, I know it is usually safe to say “I stay home with my kids.” But other people raise an eyebrow, scan me up and down, and then say, “Oh…” as if they are disappointed in my career choice.

That’s why I’ve decided to come to the defense of housewives and homemakers everywhere…someone has to, why not me? Continue reading In Defense of Housewives

Boys Will be Girls

Today is Wednesday and that means it’s He Said/She Said again, the day I talk exclusively about men and women.

My husband introduced me to this video and I had to laugh because a lot of it rings true. Plus, women making fun of men and men making fun of women is always funny. I’d love to hear your reaction.

So after watching the video, what do you think? (I’ll be sharing my thoughts in the comments).

Who nailed the other sex? Are the “men” more spot on or the “women”? Are you guilty of any of the behavior displayed? What annoys you MOST about the opposite sex?

What's it Like Being Married to Me?

This post idea is stolen…ahem, I mean, borrowed from Bianca Juarez. Besides telling you what I think it must be like being married to me, my husband is also going to give his opinion. That’s right, my husband is going to reveal what it is really like to be married to Nicole Cottrell. We wrote our portions separately, so neither of us knew what the other had to say…until now. I’ll start.

I imagine being married to me must be…

Why Can't Chicks Be More Like Dudes?

I’m a chick and I’m married to a dude. And let me just say, chicks and dudes are different. Our brains process ideas differently. We handle stress differently. We think about sex differently. You name it, it’s different. I long to ask liberals who spout the idea that there is no difference between men and women if they have actually, in fact, ever met a man or a woman.

One thing you never hear is men walking around saying things like… Continue reading Why Can't Chicks Be More Like Dudes?

15 Tips to a Happy Marriage

Yesterday I wrote about being single and today I am writing about marriage. What can I say, I like to spread the love around evenly.

Earlier this week, Carlos Whitaker wrote a post on the top 11 things he and his wife do to make their marriage a happy, healthy one. I loved the post and thought I would pay homage to Los Whit by writing my own list.

I have to say, and I’m not bragging…okay, maybe I’m bragging just a teeny tiny bit…but, my husband and I have a rockin’ marriage. We enjoy marriage and we enjoy each other. We have a few tricks up our sleeve, too. Here are our 15 tips to a great marriage: Continue reading 15 Tips to a Happy Marriage

The Lost Art of Flirting

Everyone flirts or at least they should. Married or single? Doesn’t matter. Some people are better at it than others, sure. I’ll admit, too, that some people have no idea that their glance, eye contact, or smile could even be constituted as flirting,  but it is flirting nonetheless.

The truth is, in today’s culture of hopping in bed, STDs, and one-night stands, flirting is a lost art form. More than that, many Christian women I know are downright scared to flirt, for fear of being seen as a harlot (or floozy, or tramp, or insert description of a loose woman here: _______). And men simply don’t know how.

Flirting is needed, however. Flirting is all part of the game, whether single or not. It’s time to re-learn how to flirt. It’s time to restore the lost art of flirting… Continue reading The Lost Art of Flirting

Christians and Internet Dating

“1000s of Pictures of Beautiful Single Christians,” that’s what one Christian dating website advertises. I don’t know about you, but that description kind of gives me the heebie jeebies.

How about this one: “All Single. Only Christian. Amazing Selection: Come & See.” It reminds me of an advertisement for some seedy massage parlor.

Christians and internet dating services are on the rise. More and more believers are choosing to sign up, fill out a profile, and upload a pic, in the hopes of finding their one true love.

I wonder though:  Is Jesus in the internet dating business, guaranteeing some a happily ever after, or is Christian internet dating a way of circumventing God’s will and taking matters into your own hands? Continue reading Christians and Internet Dating

The Dread of Miscarriage and the Mighty One

So, I didn’t post yesterday, and here’s why:

A week and a half or so ago, many of my pregnancy symptoms vanished. It was as if, overnight, I went from puking in the kitchen sink, to merrily going about my day.

Sure, I was still tired–exhausted really–and peeing every 15 seconds, but my other, more obnoxious mother-to-be symptoms had packed there bags.

I wasn’t worried…at first. Then, I started to just feel funny. I didn’t “feel pregnant.” I had expressed concern (mildly and inconspicuously expressed concern) to my husband. He told me to call the doctor. I didn’t.

And then, the wave of  what “could be” and what “might be” crashed over me like a tsunami. I went from “keeping it cool” to emergency mode. Suddenly, my husband and I were praying for the life of our unborn child. How did we get here? Continue reading The Dread of Miscarriage and the Mighty One

Can Men and Women Really Be Friends?

(from the archives) It’s Wednesday again and that means it’s also He Said/She Said time.

It’s an age old question (sorta). Men, women, and friendship. Is it legit? I don’t know if I have known of many genuine friendships between men and women. It seems like it is much more of a novel and progressive idea than it is a practical possibility.

I’m suspicious. And I’m curious. Can men and women really be friends? Continue reading Can Men and Women Really Be Friends?

Peeing on a Stick and Other Adventures

I hinted to you guys on Friday that I would be sharing a really big and really cool surprise today. Well, the time has come.

Some of you may be shocked, flabbergasted, amazed…and others of you might not be too excited considering the news. However, I was floored when I found out.

Here’s a hint: It’s small, the size of a lentil bean, is confirmed by peeing on a stick, and is currently making me extremely nauseous. Continue reading Peeing on a Stick and Other Adventures
